Electrical Panel Upgrade or Replacement

How do I know whether my electrical panel need to be replaced or upgraded?

It is always best to contact a license electrical contractor to determine the condition of your electrical wiring system, however there are some items that a homeowner can check .
Fuses are easy to identify. They are typically screw in and can come in several different colors including red, green, and orange. After a fuse has been blown it cannot be reset and must be replaced. It is not always easy for a homeowner to determine which fuse has gone bad. Fuse panels used in homes normally do not allow for enough circuits that todays modern homes require. The most common safety issue we see is when a circuit is doubled up under one fuse. This is a code violation and significant safety issue that should be corrected immediately.

* Is your electrical panel a fuse or breaker type?

Breakers will come in a variety of style and are used in all new homes. Breakers have a big advantage over fuse in that if they are tripped they can be easily reset by simply flipping the switch to the off position and then back to the on position. Breakers that have been tripped are much easier to locate than fuses. Even though the panel in your home may be of the breaker type, there are a couple of panels that are considered un-safe. If your panel is a Federal or Zinsco brand panel please click one of the below websites for more information. Banks Electric highly recommends upgrading to a new Eaton breaker panel if your house has either a Federal or Zinsco panel.
* Do any of the breakers feel hot when you touch them?
Although normally this problem is due to incorrect wiring it can cause serious problems and premature failure of the electrical panel. Breakers should for the most part be cool to the touch. If excessive heat is being generated this would indicate a poor connection or overload condition and should be corrected as soon as poosible.
If any of these conditions exist, we recommend calling a electrical contractor
immediately.
Your electrical panel is one of the most important safety devices
installed in your home. Electrical panels do more than distribute electrical power to the many different devices thru your home, they protect you against electrical shorts and circuits overloads that can cause a fire. If one of these conditions occur within the wiring of your home the electrical panel will open up that circuit by means of a fuse or breaker and therfore cutting off power until the condition has been repaired.
* Is there a burnt smell or do you see a black residue?
